Matcha break

Once the misunderstood cousin of green tea, now a viral sensation painting Perth's cafe scene gloriously green. We've mapped the matchas worth your time, from a tea room tucked inside one of Perth's favourite heritage buildings to a waterfront pop-up at Elizabeth Quay. Whether you're after something pure and precise or layered and indulgent, there's a pour here with your name on it.

Giant Coffee

Nicks Lane, Northbridge

This tiny hole-in-the-wall cafe punches well above its size, and the matcha einspanner is the drink that puts it on the matcha map. It reworks the Viennese coffee classic with matcha in place of espresso, topped with whipped cream and served hot or cold - a year-round permanent that converts even the die-hard coffee drinkers who wander in by accident.

Deli Gabe

97 Murray St, Perth

Deli Gabe built its following on exceptional bagels and drinks to match. When it comes to everyone's favourite green drink they've got you covered no matter which way you take it - from their signature Korean Matcha to strawberry and mango creations.

Nook. Coffee

138 Barrack St, Perth

This cosy Taiwanese cafe is owned and operated by an award-winning barista, so we can safely say they don't play around when it comes to drinks. We highly recommend trying their Jasmine Matcha Cloud and - for the hardcore matcha lovers - pairing it with their matcha basque cheesecake.

20Twenty

3/70 Aberdeen St, Northbridge

Whether you're a matcha purist or cold foam fanatic, 20 Twenty will have something to tickle your tastebuds. Their pistachio matcha's drawn a bit of a cult following - and for good reason - and pairs excellently with one of their signature mille crepe cakes.

Lulu Lala

1/100 Aberdeen St, Northbridge

A little bit down the way on Aberdeen St is Lulu Lala, one of the OGs Perth's fun drink economy. The strawberry cream matcha latte is a permanent favourite, topped with creamy foam and pretty enough to photograph, while the straight matcha latte makes a compelling case for simplicity when you're in the mood for something more low-key.

Zonts Bakehouse

228 James St, Northbridge

Zonts blends French patisserie technique with bold Asian flavour, and the queue out the front most mornings tells you everything about how well it works. While their matcha drinks are delicious, the real destination here is the pastry cabinet - specifically the Matchamisu Croissant Tart, filled with triple-layered matcha cream, mascarpone.

Teassential

St Georges Terrace & Barrack St, Perth

Teassential treats tea the way the best roasters treat coffee - with genuine reverence and technical precision. The team whisks vibrant, grassy ceremonial-grade blends to a frothy finish and stocks genmaicha and houjicha alongside the classic matcha, so there's plenty of reasons to visit a few times and work your way through the menu.

Yūgen-no Café

180 Hampden Rd, Nedlands

Named for the Japanese concept of yūgen - a profound, subtle grace that words only partially capture - this Nedlands cafe backs its aesthetic with quality ingredients. Their matcha comes from Uji, houjicha from Shizuoka, and the tea menu stays consistent rather than chasing trends. Their specialty matcha, topped with strawberry puree and salted maple foam, and has become the venue's most-ordered drink; while the straight matcha latte is perfect if you're after something more stripped back.
