Outdoor exercise spots

The cost of living's no joke right now, and if the price of a gym membership means your fitness routine's gone out the window, we say follow it and look to the great outdoors to get your body moving. From basketball courts to exercise equipment, here's our top picks.

Wellington Square

Wellington Square in East Perth is a family-friendly hub of activity, featuring picnic areas, a dog park, and heaps of amenities for exercise, including two basketball courts (one full and one half court), cricket pitches and goal posts. With plenty of shade to cool off in plus toilets, barbecues and water fountains, you could hang here for hours.

Jacob's Ladder

A cult favourite amongst locals, Jacob's Ladder is a 242-step staircase connecting Kings Park to Mount Street. When it comes to views it's got most gyms beat - you can sweat it out on the steps while taking in views of the Swan River, Darling Scarp and the City skyline. If you're really keen to feel the burn, take advantage of the exercise equipment located at the base of the stairs.

Claisebrook Cove

This inner-City park boasts natural wetlands, shaded walkways and expansive lawns, and is home to the much-loved Claisebrook Cove parkrun, a free 5k on every Saturday at 8am. Whether you're up for a walk, jog or run, click here to lock in your spot.

Mardalup Park

On the banks of the Swan River with stunning views across the water to Optus Stadium, Mardalup Park is a hidden gem in East Perth. Along with a full basketball court it has a playground, exercise equipment and barbecues. There’s also an array of cafes, restaurants and bars within a couple of minutes’ walk, clustered around peaceful Claisebrook Cove.

Narrows Interchange Parkland

A lush park with waterfalls and million dollar views, the Narrows Interchange Parkland features a basketball hoop, walking and cycling paths, and plenty of open space for exercise. Dogs are allowed off-leash, so both you and your four-legged friend can get a decent workout in.

Thelma Street

This vibrant half-court is located in a repurposed cul-de-sac amongst the leafy streets of West Perth and, best of all, is completely free to use. BYO ball and make the most of this great space.
